Southwest Minnesota State University, or SMSU for short, is a public, four-year university in Marshall, which is the county seat of Lyon County, situated in the US state of Minnesota, having a population estimated at a number of more than 12 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. Marshall is best known for the fact that it is home to Southwest Minnesota State University, and for being the headquarters of the Schwan Food Company.
SMSU was established in 1963, Southwest Minnesota State College (SMSC), which became Southwest State University (SSU) on August 1, 1975, the institution finally adopting its current name, in July, 2003. The university currently has a full-time enrollment of approximately 3,500 students , and offers various educational programs in numerous fields of study, through two major colleges: the College of Arts, Letters, and Sciences, and the College of Business, Education, and Professional Studies.
SMSU's athletic teams are known as the Mustangs, who compete in NCAA Division II, in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC), in various sports for both men and women. Their distinctive colors are brown and gold. Their slogan is, ''Our team loves us and our opponents fear us''.
Southwest Minnesota State University has an annual basketball tradition, known as Hawaiian Night, which usually coincides with the Winter Meltdown festival, celebrated during the second week of the Spring Semester that lasts from early January through early May.
